ADD Magic Cure - How the Economic Machine Works

My wife always blamed "Sesame Street" for our son's ADD problems. She kept claiming that  Sesame Street wired the brains of young kids who were watching the show, to expect stimulus and instant gratification in a series of five minute episodes. These expectations remained ingrained the brains of the show audience throughout their growing years and clashed with the monotonous, slow and disciplined, traditional school environment. So she claimed.

Rich vs. Poor - Social Tensions and Revolution

My kids are all grown up by now and able to support themselves very gracefully. However, I am always surprised by the fact that they are not at all interested in learning how our economy works. I am always frustrated with their lackadaisical attention when I try to explain to them how economic processes are working and how significant events are a result of pure economic cycles and do not, suddenly land out of the moon.

Four Ways to Reduce Debt Burden

Following the best tradition of American culture, I was constantly seeking to find the magic pill, that would alleviate my frustrations about communicating my messages about our economy to my kids. I believe that I finally found it. I am so excited about my revelations that I decided to share my finding with you.

United States Debt Burden Graph

The "magic pill" that I found is a wonderfully narrated and beautifully illustrated video presentation by investor, hedge fund manager, and philanthropist Ray Dalio. In this presentation Ray is able to explain all the basic principles that are driving the economies of the free world, in a simplified, yet not too simple way. As Albert Einstein was quoted to say:
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler

I highly recommend watching Ray Dalio's video presentation to all of you. Maybe you will be able to avoid the pain and the frustration of explaining essential information to your kids, by letting them watch.

The presentation can be found here:

Your "Other" Focal Review

Still at Intel?

Brag Sheet and final draft of your Performance Review have been long off with your manager, and now you are just heads down working hard and awaiting your Review before the first April paycheck.  Right?

Have you done your "Other" Focal Review yet?

We have updated our First Steps Page with some changes for 2017.    But the basic information and steps are the same and can be used by anyone as a pre-Review checklist.

Things such as:

  • Gathering Intranet info such as W-2 Breakdowns, SPP summaries, previous reviews, etc.
  • Resumes, LinkedIn advice
  • Matching Gifts, Volunteer Hours
  • Personal Information updates, SERP, RSUs, etc.
  • Healthcare options:   HSA, SERMA, Disability Insurance, etc.

Maybe the "Other" Focal Review should be part of your annual process, while you are waiting for that Exceeds rating.  Or will it be Outstanding with SSL1?   Do you really know what your Review will be?  How much eye contact have you had with your boss or co-workers recently?

Someone once said "Only the Paranoid Survive".   Sometimes that is very good advice.

Good luck.

Update on Unemployment and Long Term Unemployment

Following the 2015 and 2016 layoff waves at Intel Corp. we have all become aware that layoffs have a long lasting effect on the workforce. Statistics maintained by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) demonstrates the long lasting effects of economic upheavals (recession) and the growing trend for longer periods of unemployment, following layoffs. The chart below shows that as of October 2016 about 25% of those laid off during 2016 have been unemployed for 27 or more weeks. The chart also demonstrates that long-term unemployment became significantly higher since the recession that followed the housing bubble burst in 2008. It looks like due to the limited capacity of the economy to expand we may not reach the 15% median in a long time, barring complete restructuring of the economy.

Long Term Unemployed vs. Total Unemployed
Note that one out of four people (25%) who lost their jobs in 2016, will face unemployment for 27 weeks or longer.  According to the chart below, approximately 3,000,000 people experienced a permanent job loss at different times, during 2016.
Job Losers by Layoff Status
With an average of more than 2,000,000 people being laid off for 27 weeks or longer (during 2016), according to the chart below, it is clear that many more people have exhausted or will soon exhaust their unemployment insurance benefits, which are typically granted for only 26 weeks. Unless these people have substantial savings at their disposal, they are likely to default on their rents, mortgages, and debt payments and eventually fall into poverty if they cannot find replacement employment.
Duration of Unemployment
The charts below show the September 2016 unemployment rates for States in which Intel Corp. maintains significant facilities (Arizona, New Mexico, and the three West Coast States). The national average, for the last 36 years is marked on the chart as a grey line. Periods of economic recession  are shaded in grey.

Although the general trend is for unemployment rates to go down from the highest levels of 2009-2012, the 2016 numbers seem to be bucking this trend.

Grab Them by the Pu$$y

What is the power that individuals like us can use to change a system that is constantly corrupted by money? Can we change the behavior of large corporations or political parties by means that are directly available to us at the grass-roots level?

The latest presidential election campaigns are proving that very large segments of the population are disenchanted by behavior of both the right and the left, large political parties. One survey after the other carries the same message--most registered voters in this country believe that the political system is dysfunctional and corrupt, mostly due to campaign contributions and the quid-pro-quo enslavement of elected officials, repeatedly depending on donors' money to retain their seat.

A logical solution to avoid the entrenchment of money in politics--an idea that has been suggested many times in the past--is to establish public financing of election campaigns to level the playing field and limit the runaway cost of political campaigns. However, taking any step in this direction in the past, has been sabotaged and eventually blocked in Congress by the entrenched opposition of special interest groups with access to Big-Money. This opposition persists on both sides of the aisle.

Can individuals like us defeat Big-Money interests and change the system? This is an open question that was looked at by many people over the years. There is no single answer to this question. However, by looking at some of the ways in which individuals who believed in a common goal were able to get the attention of Big-Money and changed their behavior in past could give us a model to follow.

One of the extraordinary powers delegated to the banks in this country and around the world, depends on a  mechanism that they have been gifted, to turn a single dollar into hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The key to this amazing financial popcorn machine is the savings account. If you ever wondered why every bank in your state is trying to lure you to open a savings account with them, the answer is simple. Banks use every single dollar in your savings account, to claim credit from the Central Bank. In the U.S. the central bank is the Federal Reserve Bank (FRB). Depending on their risk factor, as established by the Central Bank, each bank receives a credit  that allows them to loan out, or finance, a proportional amount of debt, based upon the amount of dollars that you and people like you keep in their savings accounts. The ratio of dollars kept in these savings accounts to dollars loaned out can be 1:100, 1:1000 and much greater. This means that every single dollar that you keep in your savings account is extremely leveraged (see: Money creation).

Nowadays that we receive only "peanut dust" of interest income on our hard earned money and the stock market is moving sideways, wouldn't it be nice to get some value added benefit for our cash?

Imagine that you are going to empty your savings account. What does it mean to the bank? Perhaps not much, if a single person does it every once in a while. However, imagine that 100 or maybe 10,000 people are emptying their accounts at the same bank. This affects the amount of Currency that the bank holds in its reserves. The amount of Currency that the bank holds at any given time, is determining (among other factors) the bank's ability to issue new money in terms of new debt obligations. When you withdraw money from your savings or investment account, your heavily leveraged money is working in reverse--If many people do that simultaneously, the bank liquidity factor becomes at risk, because unless the bank can recall its issued loans and convert collateral to cash in a short time, the bank will default or at least will face a major investment restructuring. This is unlikely to happen in a broad manner, unless the public "runs on the bank", as happened in 1929 (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_run). However, for each individual banking institution, the risk of savings or investment accounts being emptied due to public sentiment and the funds moving to a competitor's coffers, the risk is very significant.

Of course inducing banks to default may not be good for the economy in the long run; however, if individuals with savings or investment accounts in specific banks want to send a powerful message to the Bank Board of Directors, they can use a policy of what Teddy Roosevelt referred to as "Speak Softly and Carry a Big Stick". In this case, make a symbolic withdrawal out of your savings account, followed by a message to the board, implying that you intend to withdraw all the money in your account and transfer the proceeds to another bank, because the bank invests in companies or interests that you are objecting to. To demonstrate to the financial institute management that you are not operating alone in this game, perhaps you and 150 other people would withdraw the exact sum of $1776.00 on the same day. If 15,000 people are collaborating in such a move, it is very likely that an alarm bell will be ringing in at the bank's headquarters. This kind of communication technique applies to investment banks, trust funds and company stock. Your leveraged money, is your power and if you work in concert with a group of people who share a common goal, the implied threat of disinvestment becomes a powerful tool.

A case in point proving the financial power of the public is the success that the disinvestment movement had on changing the regime in South Africa during the 1970's. Other examples involve movement by environmentally conciseness groups to affect the activities of oil companies. The disinvestment movement is typically associated more with the political left than the right; however, there is no real reason for this distinction. Voting with your money is available to all of us. It is a fundamental and effective action that can be materialized by any grass-roots movement.

Don't miss your opportunity to vote with your money, where one person can have more than one vote... :)

How to create a new Eliminati Chapter

Is this the process to follow?
  1. Get permission from your direct Manager first.
  2. Submit a set of Powerpoint slides to your Management team for kibbitzing and a thousand questions
  3. Get approval from all other Stakeholders who have veto power, but not any kind of final approval power
  4. Get approval from Legal
  5. Get approval from ... ?
Or, is this the process to follow?
  1. You have been let go or voluntarily left The Company
  2. There is a nice coffee house or pub near you and others
  3. You tell some people you are going to be there at a certain time, and to pass it on.
  4. You be there at that time

If you want to use The Eliminati name for such a meeting, please do so with our blessings.

There is a scene in the movie "The Shawshank Redemption", where the character Red is finally outside of prison after 40 years as an inmate.  But, ...

Forty years I been asking permission to piss. I can't squeeze a drop without say-so.   --Red

Software Developers
Prepare for Your next Job Opportunities

I am amazed at how the greater public perception of software functionality is still focused on web applications. While web application developers are probably filling the bulk of IT-related job market at this time, this job market segment has become saturated and is gradually trending down in terms of both demand and job compensation expectations.

Throughout my many years as a computer technology consultant I learned that the best income is derived from opportunities that are present in niche markets. The main challenge is to study the market and identify such niche opportunities, because many times even your customers do not know what to ask for. Great advantages are waiting for those who prepare for the future and are ready to serve niche requirements before others discover them and before they become main-stream and later on, turn into commodity.

During my years of service at Intel Corp. as a Systems Software Architect, I saw numerous opportunities for company operations to directly benefit from Machine Learning applications. While serving on the staff of the Electrical Validation department, I actually initiated two company wide, strategic projects that could have directly saved the company 30-40 million dollars in labor hours each year and in addition, cut critical response time to chip manufacturing issues, from weeks, to days or even hours. The latter capability in particular, was critical in my mind, to retain the company in a competitive position, while expanding the customer base that it serves, into smaller OEMs. Unfortunately, corporate Intel initiated the mindless layoffs of 2015, which caught me in their net and consequently, Intel Corp. will never see the cost savings and efficiency improvements out of my two projects that, due to my absence, met a silent death.

Operations Research (OR)  and Machine Learning (ML) go hand in hand nowadays. Operations Research has roots in in the first half of the 20th century (WW-II war planning) and a long history of applications. Although Arthur Samuel was credited with development of the first computer learning program, playing checkers against a human opponent (in 1956), Machine Learning remained mostly on the books and only began evolving in a serious way over the last two decades of our time.

Arthur Samuel and the IBM 701 playing checkers in 1956

Machine learning is a technology that its time has arrived. Though you can run machine learning code on any average computer, most automatic learning algorithms benefit from execution on large scale hardware once you begin dealing with very large data-sets. Nowadays, you do not need to actually own expensive hardware, because highly scale-able and affordable computing apparatus is accessible à la carte (pay per use) from companies like Google, Amazon, and other operators. Anyone willing to apply machine learning to solve practical problems can get access to advanced computing capabilities, without much up-front capital investment.

To quote Wikipedia, modern Machine Learning classifies three broad categories of applications:
  • Supervised learning: The computer is presented with example inputs and their desired outputs, given by a "teacher", and the goal is to learn a general rule that maps inputs to outputs.
  • Unsupervised learning: No labels are given to the learning algorithm, leaving it on its own to find structure in its input. Unsupervised learning can be a goal in itself (discovering hidden patterns in data) or a means towards an end (feature learning).
  • Reinforcement learning: A computer program interacts with a dynamic environment in which it must perform a certain goal (such as driving a vehicle), without a teacher explicitly telling it whether it has come close to its goal. Another example is learning to play a game by playing against an opponent.
For those who are not afraid to learn and apply their learning, I highly recommend looking at sharpening your skills in the art of machine learning programming.

The Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR) provides a large collection of research papers, articles, and software, covering the gamut of ML algorithms, frameworks, and applications. Click on the link below to navigate into the main software page of this site:
     JMLR Software Page

Good summary of the ML field can be found in this article:

Tensors Flowing
Another article on the same web site includes some examples of code written to take advantage of the Google sponsored TensorFlow  machine learning framework to apply ML solutions for data analysis.

To read this article click here: Tensorflow -- 3 Ways

Note that Google actually developed a specialized and power efficient ML hardware architecture (called the TesnsorFlow Machine), utilizing a large array of Tensor Processing Units (TPU). This architecture provides several orders of magnitude improvement in power/performance ratio for ML applications.

Read the full article about the TensorFlow Machine by clicking on this link:
Google's Tensor Processing Unit explained: this is what the future of computing looks like

TensorFlow tutorials are available here: Tutorials

This is another machine learning framework that is available in Open Source form, through the Apache organization. PredictionIO website:
https://predictionio.incubator.apache.org/index.html contains a lot of introductory information, including demos and tutorials.

For those of you who are versed in Python I recommend looking at:

scikit-learn

Scikit-learn is built on top of the very common NumPy, SciPy, and matplotlib libraries. Scikit-learn provides an easy to use python-based interface to a large variety of ML algorithms and functions and allows pythons data analysis programs to process and display the resulting data in a python native way.

The Machine Learning chapter of GitHub provides a directory of ML open source projects. Some of these have been mentioned in this article, while the rest are left for you to explore on your own.

The above mentioned ML frameworks are only selective examples of the growing number of ML tools in existence today. I suggest to choose one of them to start with, to get your feet wet. Once you get proficient in understanding of what ML can do for your application, you can move on to another framework and compare their capabilities.

Your comments are welcome. Please click on the commenting link below the article and submit your input.

Self Representation in the U.S. Oregon District Courts

General Disclaimer: This information was collected from public sources and is not intended to replace professional legal advice, given by a licensed attorney.

In some cases you may find difficulty finding attorney who will commit to taking your case to court. The reason for this situation can be as simple as:

  • An attorney is not available to take your case before your filing deadline approaches
  • You cannot afford pay your attorney fees and/or retainer out of pocket
  • An attorney believes that your case is going to consume too much of their time
  • An attorney does not understand the merit of your case and is not interested in spending more time listening to you
  • An attorneys office liability insurance does not provide enough coverage to protect them in case that you do not prevail in a civil litigation suit (does not directly apply to employment discrimination suits) .
There are of course other, simple and more complex cases, which we do not intend to discuss here.

in cases where you cannot find a suitable attorney for hire, apparently the courts allow for self-representation (Pro Se in legaleeze).

Click on the link below to discover more details about the process:

Representing Yourself

Among other things there is a special repository of legal forms that you can choose form and fill according to your needs. Click on this link: Pro Se Forms to see the appropriate list of forms.

Here is a sample content, copied from the Representing Yourself web site:

Pro Se Resources

The United States District Court for the District of Oregon uses the federal judiciary’s Case Management/Electronic Case Files (CM/ECF) system to support electronic filing, service, and access to court records. The CM/ECF system contains the official court records of proceedings. (See Local Rule [LR] 5-3(a). The Court no longer maintains paper files.

As a self-represented party, non-prisoner, you may (1) apply for a user account which will allow you to file documents electronically with the Court through the CM/ECF system or (2) consent to electronic service of documents upon you via e-mail from the CM/ECF system when documents are filed in your case. Each option is explained on the following pages, and you must mark on the application form on the next page the option for which you are applying. ANY REQUEST MUST BE APPROVED BY THE COURT BEFORE IT BECOMES EFFECTIVE. You will be notified by an order whether your application is approved.

The following tutorials must be completed by pro se parties wishing to apply for registration in CM/ECF:

Business Opportunities on This Web Site?

Several people approached me via email with a request to use this site for promoting their new startup businesses. All requests came from ex-Intel members of our group who share our common situation. At this point I hesitate to modify the nature of this web site in a way that will not be compatible with our goals. However, at the same time I would like to give our sisters and brothers the opportunity to "plug" their new startups to our constituency. I would also like to allow people who have business ideas and who are searching for partners to join them, to place their "wanted" ads on this site.

This is all new and therefor we need to mull it over for a few days. We may be able to start a small scale experiment within a short time, once we understand our audience's needs. We would need your input regarding the above and we are looking for your comments. Please click on the comment link below the article and share it with us.

Continuing Your Life Insurance - 31 days after Release Agreement

If you got a letter from SECURIAN, do not throw it away!  It is NOT Junk Mail.
It is a notice that you have 31 days to continue your Intel Life Insurance coverage, unchanged.  That means no medical exams, or other rechecking.

Some people use these for Estate Planning too, as a way to pass on money to others without probate.

States other than Oregon might also provide Disability Insurance, in addition to the Life Insurances.

Seriously, calculate the Life Insurance you need, with what you had outside of your work coverage.   And even though you might find these are not the best bargains for you, you can always cancel them later.  Although people who have been signing up, have been seeing that continuing with group coverage is often cost competitive.

So don't wait to decide.   If you threw away your letter, call the phone number listed to get the information again.

Hillsboro Library Study and Conference Rooms

It takes a little searching to find them, but reservations for rooms at the Hillsboro Main Library and Shute Libraries can be found at the following (obscure) URL.

http://hillsboro-oregon.gov/index.aspx?page=164

The Study Rooms hold 4 people comfortably, and the Conference Rooms hold up to 8 seated.  These are free to Library patrons, you just need your Library # and PIN # to reserve them.

The other larger rooms do have a rental fees, but they are pretty reasonable.  There is a 'Room Rental' link on the Study Rooms page above.

Worksource Calendar

I have posted the June WorkSource calendar of events below. One worth pointing out is the High-Tech Networking Group. This is held every week on Mondays and Fridays. The speakers and agenda are on the second attachment, highlighted in yellow.

Life in a Lifeboat

Nowadays that a growing number of Intel Corp. employees are forced to leave the company under duress of forced retirement and massive layoffs, we would like to encourage these people and assure them that there is still life worth living, after their Intel career has unexpectedly and prematurely ended.

If you have been an Intel Corp. employee that was affected by the company's executives ill conceived move to rid itself from senior and consequently older employees, I would like to provide you with positive encouragement and provide you with a (figuratively speaking) a flotation device that may ease coping with your situation.

I am taking the liberty to use an analogy to explain your situation:

Imagine that as an affected employee you and your family members were present on the deck of cruise ship when it suddenly hit an iceberg.  Luckily and through the aftermath of the collision, you somehow, managed to escape the sinking ship and transferred into a lifeboat.

Of course, as is usually the case, there is a reason why the cruise ship hit the iceberg, in the first place: the captain and the deck officers, spent too much time partying in the ballroom, to notice that they were on a collision course with the iceberg.

Regardless of the officers' shortcomings, you are now facing a new reality. You can thank Gaia or the Holy Ghost for not ending your life in the freezing ocean water, and you have to accept that surviving without the luxurious amenities of the cruise ship is still a better alternative than swimming in brine and dying from hypothermia.

Imagine that the cruise ship is still not fully submerged under water; however, a big open gash keeps letting sea water in, the captain and his officers remain intoxicated from last nights party. It is very unlikely that they were in a state of mind that enabled them to admit to the reality that suddenly hit them in the face. They still expected their cheese cakes to be brought to their cabins, alongside their coffee and breakfast. They never imagined that the next party that they will attend would be referred to as "The Donner Party".

The 28th page of Patrick Breen's diary, recording his observations in late February 1847, including "Mrs Murphy said here yesterday that thought she would Commence on Milt & eat him. I dont [know] that she has done so yet, it is distressing."

While your life has been saved for the time being, the limited space of the lifeboat is crammed with many other passengers (most of them you have never met or interacted before). you must consider how to proceed with your life when the probability of hitting land or being rescued is unknown. The water and provisions in the lifeboat are limited. Some of your fellow passengers might have navigation skills, others might have useful mechanical, or perhaps medical skills. Others may have no skills that seem that could be relevant to your current situation; however, they might be equipped with mental toughness that makes them ready to make good decisions and help others who might be in a state of shock.

As the day go by life on the crowded lifeboat becomes intolerable, as food an water become scarce. Dire situations of this nature lead most people into two possible states of mind:
  1. View your lifeboat mates as resources and work cooperatively to maximize the chances of survival for all of you. This might be tough; however, if you read about many survival stories, you will find that resourcefulness and cooperation among individuals are key to survival.
  2. View your boat mates as competitors for the limited water and provisions available in the lifeboat emergency supply. As much as the thought is disturbing, under "normal" circumstances, your survival instincts may drive you to view your unlucky lifeboat companions as food source...
If we leave the above Titanic analogy I would like to return to the main points of this article, which are:

Give yourself a reality check:
    • Most of you should have money to last through at least a few months without additional income. The money would last longer if you spend it wisely and control your expenses.
    • Most of you are entitled to Unemployment Compensation, which may not look like your regular paycheck; however, it is an additional income that is available to you for up to a maximum of 26 weeks, during a period of 12 months, after your last day of work.
    • COBRA (alternative) medical insurance coverage is guaranteed to be available to you by Federal Law, for a period of 18 months from your termination date. Besides the COBRA coverage you can find other medical insurance programs that could be more optimal for your needs.
    • You have many colleagues who could provide you with a listening ear and a place to vent your frustrations without driving your family members nuts by repeatedly bitching about your condition.
 Find your support network:
    • Join other people who found themselves in the same "boat", particularly those who have been through the same experience in prior years. The "Eliminati" group includes several dozen people who have been through the trials and tribulations of layoff from Intel Corp. and at least some of them are willing to help you cope with your hardship.
    • If you have a Google account (which is easy to establish and free of charge), join this web site and receive automatic notification of events organized by our support group. Otherwise, just put the URL of the web site <www.pdx-tie.org> on your bookmark list and visit frequently.
    • Check the instructions on this web site regarding how to join the Eliminati mailing list through Google Groups.
    • Seek friends and family members with whom you can spend quality time that would allow you to be distracted from developing "circular thoughts" about your misery.
    • Seek professional counseling for mental health issues. Experiencing depression is very common in the situation that you are facing now and when depression reaches a clinical stage, it is very difficult to recover form it without professional help.
Show solidarity to your colleagues and advance our common cause:
    • Active solidarity can be a very constructive force. One foot tapping in the street, does not have the same effect as the march of hundreds or thousands of people. From the general public perspective, the power of an organized group is many times greater than the sum of its individual members power.
    • Share information with your colleagues in a manner that would allow us to uncover significant facts. Each of us may view their case as "happened to me" and feel powerless to respond to injustice. The power at be use this "divide and conquer" method to diminish the conscientiousness, as well as the ability of the masses to respond. By sharing information among us, we can uncover some actionable information to the benefit of our members.
    • Be willing to have skin in the game when action for the common good is required. There is no way to win by sitting on the bench.
    • Dedicate some of your idle time while being unemployed to contribute to the welfare and the common cause of people in your support group.
    • Share your discoveries, your experiences and your thoughts with group members. Each and every one of us has something to contribute that would also be appreciated by others.
    • If you find opportunities that you yourself could not utilize or harvest, do not assume that they are not worthy to mention. Other members of our group may appreciate your sharing.

Happy navigation.

VSP Checklist for Intel - June 2016

Looks like June 24th is big last day for those taking the VSP packages.  Here is some quick advice, kind of mixed up together.

  • Websites - Make sure that you login to all the websites you need before you leave. UBS, Cigna, My Health, MySPP, etc etc.
  • MySPP - off of Circuit.  Be sure you have the February SPP donations sheet if you contributed.  August donations will probably be refunded to you later.
  • Matching Gifts - make any matching gifts to charity before your last day
  • Volunteer Hours - have you entered your hours so far?   Make sure you do before you leave.
  • Copy your personal files. Bookmarks, links, contacts, software.  Your Intel system will be gone.  Don't take any company stuff, just whatever personal stuff you managed to copy over.  Don't worry about cleaning it up, IT will wipe the OS from it and install a new one.
  • Don't take any company stuff.    Be good, be professional.  Doesn't hurt to repeat this message.
  • MyHealthBenefits - make sure your selections are correct and accurate!   This will help if you take COBRA coverage later.
  • Company Cards - Turn them in, deactivate them.   Except the Goodie Drawer Card, you will need this for a while afterwards, if your VSP treatment includes some extra bonuses.
  • EPP - you can still purchase from EPP after you leave, but if you think you will need something, good to get it now.
  • Medical/Dental treatments - now might be the time to get them started.  If you have been putting off your kids braces or a doctor ordered test, think about doing it.
  • Prescriptions - Restock your orders early, in case there is interruption of coverage.  You never know what paperwork glitches might occur in switching over to new health coverage.
  • RSU's - Those vested belong to you forever.  You do not have to sell them right away.  Have a plan for when you sell them, even if not this year.  In fact, you might not want to this year.  Check with a financial advisor.
  • SERP 401K - There are options with this to leave it or transfer, but only after the last paychecks have been processed.  You can even access before age 59.5, but there are income considerations that you should check with a financial advisor about, and other options.  SERP to IRA is easy to rollover, SERP to Roth would produce income.
  • Extra Donations - To SERP, and to your HSA might lower your income, and help fully fund for this year.  Be sure to run some of those numbers, especially with a financial advisor.
  • College Aid - got a kid in college?   They might qualify for more aid, if you can guesstimate your next year's income.  Ask the kid for the aid forms, and notify the office.
  • LinkedIn - get on it, and get your profile updated.  It does not have to be perfect at first.  Just the basics, and you can be more informal on LinkedIn than your resume.  Plan to get on it more frequently.  This is what most employers will look at first these days.
  • Resume - pull one out and refresh it.  The recommendation is don't go back longer than 15 years of job history.
  • Focal and Stock Letters - do you have copies of your previous 5 Focals?
  • Internal Employment History - Don't forget to get your Internal Employment History.  This can be accessed somewhere off of Circuit.  Should have Job TItle, Start Date, Duration, etc.
  • Build a team of your advisers.  Friends, Family, Colleagues who you can safely review both your tasks and materials with.   Think about having your own crew, or Kitchen Cabinet.   Also, ask people who you might want to give their names for jobs that ask for Recommendations.  And don't forget to write and recommend others too.  Be as friendly to your friends as they are to you.
This is only a partial list.  Good luck!

  • Another thing I would add to this list is records of DRA's. When I asked for a list of DRA's with dates and descriptions they couldn't give it to me.
  • 1. Expense reports
    2. Distribution lists where you are the owner (may not be in contacts) - Outlook lists where you are a recipient will be updated with your leaving, so not important.  -Editor
  • Email Notifications - Do you have your library or dry cleaners send notifications to your @intel.com address?  Might want to start changing those now.
